

NORTHPORT - Jimmy Austin Barnes, age 87, of Northport, Alabama passed away November 25, 2018 at Hospice of West Alabama. He was born on December 8, 1930 in Berry, Alabama. His parents were Lowell Austin and Mildred Moore Barnes.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents; William Austin and Ruth Johns Barnes, James Wilson and Cordelia Hyde Moore.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Wanda Deavours Barnes; two sons, Eric Austin and his wife, Caroline, James Tyler and his wife, Amber; grandchildren, Caitlyn Noel and Caleb McCoy Barnes; one aunt, Geneva Moore; and several cousins.
Jimmy served his country during the Korean War from 1953-1955. He was in the 19th Ordnance Battalion stationed in Mannheim, Germany. He left the Army as a Corporal. His favorite sports were quail hunting, fishing and enjoyed watching Alabama football.
He graduated from Berry High School with the class of 1949. He then graduated from Marion MiIitary Institute, Marion, Alabama in 1951 and was a
member of "A" Company and ''Honor'' Company. While attending Marion, he played football, baseball and cross-country track. In 2004, he had the honor of being
inducted into the Fayette County Sports Hall of Fame.
He had a wonderful personality, many friends, had a talent for storytelling, and in his younger days, was an excellent dancer.
A few of his favorite music artist were: Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Marty Robbins, Anne Murray, Nat King Cole, The Drifters, Glen Campbell, Johnny Cash and many artists of the 50's and 60's. He also enjoyed gospel music.
He worked as a Supply Clerk at the Central Foundry until it closed, Jim Walter Mines #5, and as a Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Deputy until 1993.
Jimmy loved his family, his country, and God. He was baptized in the Berry Methodist Church, Berry, Alabama at a young age.
The family would like to thank: the caring nurses and staff at Amedisys Home Health, DCH first floor MICU, Forest Manor Rehab, Hospice of West Alabama, Drs. Regina Harrell and Stephen Browne, friends and neighbors of Martin Road and Martin Road Spur along with special friends Joe Beckham, Alvin Hamner and Llannie Ellison.

Visitation will be Tuesday, November 27, 2018, from 1-3 p.m., at Sunset Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider.
