TUSCALOOSA - John Moore Brewer, age 91, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, passed away Sunday December 10, 2017 at VA Cottage 147. A celebration of his life will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 13, 2017, at Sunset Funeral Home with Pastor Adam Brewer officiating. Burial will be at the Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon - 1:00 p.m. Wednesday December 13, 2017, at the funeral home with Sunset Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing the service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ola Henry and Pearlie Moore Brewer; wife, Helen Sexton Brewer; brother, J.H. Brewer; sister, Faye Brewer Hollingsworth; and step-daughter, Sue Valdez.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Swaffield Brewer of Tuscaloosa; sons, Johnny Brewer (Beverly) of Cottondale and Charles Brewer; grandchildren, Scott Brewer (Penny) of Oxford, Ala., Mark Brewer Sr. (Kim) of Tuscaloosa, Ana Valdez of Tuscaloosa, Steven Tunnell (Jennifer) of Coaling, Ala., Stephanie Jones (Josh) of Duncanville, Ala., Brian Swaffield (Rebecca) of Odenville, Ala. and Forrest Swaffield (Lindsey) of Margaret, Ala.; great-and grandchildren, Marissa Davis of Wichita, Kansas, Lindsey Brewer of Oxford, Ala., Christopher and Nathan Brewer of Tuscaloosa, Matthew Pritchett of Tuscaloosa, Madison, Morgan and Will Tunnell, MacKenzie, Jackson and Tucker Jones, Shelby and Hunter Swaffield and Hiedi, Bridgette, and Charlie Swaffield,. He is also survived by his brother, Bill Brewer (Betty), Northport; sister, Jean Leonard (Charles) of Northport; sister-in-law, Arlene Brewer of Northport and step-sons Tommy Swaffield (Pam) of Irondale, Ala. and Pedro Valdez of Tuscaloosa.

He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II on the ship the USS Aucilla (AO-56) and was in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He also served in the Tuscaloosa County American Legion Honor Guard (American Legion Post 123) for 22 years. His name is listed on the Tuscaloosa Veterans Memorial Park Honor Roll of Veterans Monument as a World War II Navy Veteran in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Pallbearers will be Scott Brewer, Mark Brewer, Bill Brewer, Larry Brewer, Tommy Swaffield, Brian Swaffield, Forrest Swaffield and Steven Tunnell.

Honorary Pallbearers are members of the American Legion Honor Guard and the VA Cottage 147 staff.
