I just learned that our dear Athens has passed. He not only did beautiful work in my home, but was a true gentleman and friend. When he would come for a quote or to check on a project, I always baked a honey cake which he said was “just like mama’s”. Athens was one of a kind and I will miss him. 

Love and miss you so much daddy. You are my hero and all of these stories are what my poor husband has to live up to. May your memory be eternal daddy. I miss your laugh and snide dry jokes and being able to call you when I need help.  I will forever miss your laugh and the look you would give me when I came up with another crazy hair color or outfit.I promise to take care of mommy and kick down as many doors as I need to to be  a 1/4 of how successful you are. I promise to raise Sophia with warm memories of Afens and to be a strong loving woman like the strong Bordokas women before her.  I hope you enjoyed the beautiful celebration of your life as I did. The people who came to pay respects came from every wok of life which showed how really special you are to everyone and humbled me to my core. 
Please know I will forever wait to hear you say "Hi Meesea" again.

Athens loved to host his friends and family. He and Miss Ileana would have a wonderful Christmas dinner where there would be 20 to 25 in attendance. Athens would hang tarps from the covered patio and set up portable heaters to keep everyone warm.  He was a very good cook, his lamb with roasted potatoes was one of my favorite things to eat along with all of the other fixings he and Ileana cooked up. If you left their home hungry, it was your fault, you didn’t eat enough!
Athens was guaranteed to do or say something funny every time we sat down for one of our famous board games at family functions. He would make us all laugh til we cried.  One game we played had a small hour glass filled with sand that gives you about 20 to 30 seconds to give an answer. When it was Athens turn, he would freeze, stare at the hourglass, look to his left for assistance, where his wife Miss Ileana was sitting, who would be laughing and telling him “I can’t help you”. As the the grains of sand flowed to the bottom, his teammates cheered him on wildly with words of encouragement to give an answer. Well time would be up and Athens would MUTTER, “I couldn’t think of anything to say” and then he would burst out laughing at himself, his teammates would also be laughing, not at him but with him because he never took himself seriously.
I am going to miss his good nature, his kind heart, and all of the good times I had with him and I’m glad I met Athens in 1988.

1988, that was the year I met Athens and little did I know the next 34 years were going to be filled with lots of laughter and good times.
When I married into the family, Athens was my best man and that was the 1st time I had the pleasure of seeing him on the dance floor. If any of you saw him dance, you will understand when I say his John Travolta good looks did not translate to Saturday Night Fever dance moves! That didn’t stop him from having a good time and cutting a rug. He was a good sport about it by always laughing, and giving you that big smile, you know, the one that was a wide as the Mediterranean.
Athens was the hardest working person I have ever known, working 6 days a week, for as long as I can remember, to provide for his family. He was also the most generous with his time helping family and friends with whatever needed to be done. He was 5ft 11, 200lbs with an enviable head of hair and very strong. Whenever something heavy needed to be moved, ole Hercules Athens was more than happy to stop what he was doing and come help. He helped me load a refrigerator onto the back of my truck, pick up an old 1990’s picture tube tv that weighed about 220 lbs, and erect a Christmas tree that was so heavy it broke two stands. And he made it look EASY. Those were just a few things that he did to help me without complaining or ever asking for anything in return.
Athens was also a problem solver. He could fix just about anything. Sometimes, very “creatively”.  He once had an electrical problem with one of his vehicles. His solution was to get a paper clip and use it as a ground from point A to point B and to wrap it with duct tape. I saw him about 3 weeks later and asked him about his vehicle. He said it worked for a while but he ended up taking it in for repair. I asked him what the mechanic said, he looked at me, smiled, shrugged that little shrug of his and told me the mechanic blurted out “WHO DID THIS MICKEY MOUSE JOB”, we both just laughed.

My friend Athens was a man filled with kindness & honor .
Athens was my stone fabricator for 35 years, doing every project I ever designed . He was always a pleasure to work with, making me samples of stone details, special finishes & whatever I needed to show my clients.

We became friends, we shared about our children & grand children. We laughed about fussy clients ….. I never worried as his fabrications we’re always perfect .
If there was an issue , Athens handled it with grace & efficiency.
He was so proud of his family .
He took pride in his work.
My memories are full as his stone work is in every room of my house from cabinetry to tables, bathrooms & my  handsome kitchen .
His son Nick did a lot of the work at my house.
Beautiful man & friend , I will miss you .
Athens ….. proud & kind always with a smile .
I look forward to meeting the family .
