At age seventeen, he and his brothers joined the Armed Forces to defend our country in World War II. Bob flew sixteen missions as a B-24 Liberator gunner and became a sergeant before the war’s end.
Upon returning home, Bob moved west and played in the Minor League Baseball Farm System. During his time as a pitcher for the Tucson Cowboys, Bob met Marge, who became his wife in 1950. They settled in the San Fernando Valley, where they lived for 65 years.
Bob began work in the ophthalmology field, which he made a career of for 35 years. Bob also loved to fly so he obtained his pilot’s license and owned two planes.
Bob and Marge had four daughters- Mary, Kathleen, Sharon, and Maureen. His daughters recall accompanying Bob on many work trips- either driving or flying with him. His favorite places to spend time with his family included Hawaii and Spain.
As his daughters grew up and married, he became a grandfather to his three granddaughters- Crystal, Shannon, and Megan. His granddaughters adored and admired him greatly and loved spending time with him in his later years after he retired. Bob was always happiest when spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 67 years- Marge, his daughters, his granddaughters, and also five sisters and one brother as well as many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will take place at Our Lady of Lourdes Church on Saturday, March 17th at 10:30am.
Bob’s family would like to express gratitude for the prayers that we’ve received during this time. Bob Callahan truly was one-of-a-kind and we will all miss our hero dearly.
