Born in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan to the late Josephine and Lavern Nichols, Dennis left home to serve during the Vietnam War as a member of the United States Navy Submarine Service. During his time stationed in Groton, he met his wife and they relocated for a short time to Charleston, SC before returning to CT to be closer to family. After his service, Dennis obtained his degree in electrical engineering and enjoyed a lengthy career in defense and systems engineering throughout Southern New England.
Dennis is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Joanne (Bouley) Nichols; his daughter Jennifer, son-in-law Jamie, and his grandson Owen. He also leaves behind his dear brother-in-law Ronald, sister-in-law Trisha, nieces Nicole and Emily; three special godchildren; two sisters and a brother. He was predeceased by his beloved son, Ryan, and two brothers.
Dennis loved animals, music, model trains and a good April Fool’s Day prank. Throughout the years his most joyous moments came from the time spent and discussions had with his family and lifelong friends whom he considered just as close. Time spent fishing with friends; building and fixing computers, scouting, watching science fiction movies and gaming with Ryan; riding roller coasters, going on ski trips, working summers with Jenn and tutoring her and her friends in the toughest of subjects during their high school and college years; working on home and yard improvement projects with Jamie; and time being a Papa – teaching Owen to fish, tending campfires and roasting marshmallows together, and traveling throughout the Northeast with Joanne to cheer Owen on at too many baseball, hockey and ultimate frisbee games to count. Denny always had a smile on his face and a story to tell. He was so very loved and will be missed by all.
In honor of his wishes, there will be no services at this time. A celebration of life will be hosted by his family at a future date.
