
Norwich- Edward J. Seder, died peacefully and gracefully on November 16, 2014 at home with his family by his side after 101 wonderful years. He was born in Springfield, MA on October 12, 1913 to the late Charles and Anna (Kravitz) Seder. On August 25, 1940 Ed married Lillian Golub in Bozrah.
At a young age, he joined his father working in the family business, Shetucket Iron and Metal. He continued to be involved in the day to day operations of the business well into his nineties.
Throughout his life, Ed was interested in politics on local, state and national levels. He was active in Norwich politics as a member of the Republican Town Committee, serving on both the Norwich City Council and Board of Education. He was also a member of the Republican State Central Committee and the Governor’s Small Business Advisory Committee. He was honored by the Republican State Central Committee, receiving the Pat Futtner Award in 1992 at the Prescott Bush Dinner and the Connecticut Republican Annual Congressional Award from the 2nd District in 2001.
Ed attended several National Republican Presidential Conventions as a voting delegate. One of Ed’s proudest accomplishments was being chosen to be a member of the Electoral College and actually vote to elect the U.S. President.
Ed was involved in many local community organizations He was a member of the Norwich Community Development Commission, the Norwich Harbor Improvement Commission and was active in forming the Norwich Martin Luther King Center. He was a member of the Norwich Rotary for many years, and numerous social and fraternal organizations.
Ed is survived by his wife Lillian, sons Michael and his wife Judith (Levin) of West Hartford, Stephen and his wife Jane (King) of Bozrah and daughter Joan of Norwich. He is also survived by his grandchildren Jennifer Cohen and her husband Steven of Farmington, CT, Sarah Shapiro and her husband Jonathan of Middletown, CT, step-granddaughter Julianne Weiner and her husband Seth of Boyds, MD, Katherine Karon and her husband Adam of Newton, MA, Andrew Seder and his wife Rebecca (Galligan) of Quaker Hill. In addition, great-grandchildren Alyssa and Sasha Cohen, Lily and Ari Shapiro, step great-grandchildren Benjamin and Bria Weiner, Stephen and Max Karon, Zen, Teva, and Rayla Seder. He is also survived by his brother Walter Seder of Florida and his sister Sylvia Eisenberg of Mystic, CT.
He was predeceased by his sister Esther Seder, grandson Joshua White Seder and great-grandson Daya Edward Seder.
Ed will always be remembered for his constant optimism, compassion and belief that the next day would always be better.
The family wishes to thank Ed’s many caregivers who provided kindness, comfort and compassionate care to him.
A graveside will be held on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m., at the Hebrew Benevolent Cemetery #2, Route 12, Preston, CT.
