Born March 20, 1930, in the Bronx, New York, Herb was raised with a strong work ethic and deep sense of responsibility that shaped his life. He attended Palmertown School, earned his GED at NFA so he could take care of his family farm. He then proudly served in the United States Army in Schweinfurt Germany, where he cooked in the commissary.
He met and married the love of his life, Frances Plotnick, who predeceased him in 2016. Together, they built both a family and a business. What began as a store on wheels delivering eggs, milk, and locally grown produce, grew into a storefront on Route 32 that has now served the community for over 60 years. Through long hours and steady dedication, Herb created more than a deli, he created a place where generations continue to gather.
Herb was a proud member of the Lions Club for over 50 years and valued service to his community as much as he valued hard work. He had a deep love for personally shaking the hands of the farmers who grew the products he sold for his store. From the Mums at Sep’s in Long Island to Cabot Cheese in Cabot, Vermont, he respected all those he worked with. Herb enjoyed classic cars, watching the Celtics and UConn games, and most of all sitting in the corner of his restaurant while his family continues carrying on his legacy.
He is survived by his sister, Adele Diamond; his daughter, Ellen Curtin and her husband Keith; his son, Jeff Plotnick and his wife Jayne; his grandchildren, David and Elyssa; and his beloved great-granddaughter, Isabella Rose, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 2nd at 1pm at Beth Jacob Synagogue, followed by a private burial. A Celebration of Life will be held around his birthday in March. Details to follow.
Herb’s legacy lives on in his family and in the community he faithfully served for more than six decades.
The Church and Allen Funeral Home, is entrusted with arrangements.
