Neil H. Blinderman of Boynton Beach, FL, formerly of Norwich, CT and Old Lyme, CT passed away October 24, 2021 after a lengthy battle with leukemia. The tenacity with which he faced his illness and resulting complications was indicative of his stubborn nature and incredible will to live.
Neil was born in Norwich on April 12, 1944, the son of the late Rutherford and Sylvia (Golub) Blinderman. He graduated from the Norwich Free Academy in 1962, where he excelled both academically and on the fields.
He talked fondly about the camaraderie and life lessons learned on his football and baseball teams. He went on to graduate from Marietta College in Marietta, OH in 1967 with dual degrees in Geology and Petroleum Engineering.
After several years in the oil fields of Louisiana, he came back to Connecticut to work in and grow Thames Printing Company, the business his parents began.
Neil was a natural leader, and served in many organizations throughout his life – his college fraternity, 4-H, Rose Arts Festival, Hebrew Benevolent Society, and Junior Achievement to name a few. He passed his love of sports on to the next generation as coach to several youth sports teams. Neil believed that results came with hard work and determination, both of which served him well.
A gregarious and social person, Neil was always thankful for the many friends and family who have been part of his life, including new friends made in Florida in recent years. He enjoyed golf, international travel, unhealthy food, casino life, card games, and a good book. He inherited his father’s love of the Yankees, much to his Red Sox-loving mother’s disappointment. He loved growing up surrounded by a large family and watching the family tree branch out with new generations.
Neil is survived by his love, Ellie Fox, brother, Sander Blinderman, children, Richard Blinderman (Barri Gerson), Elise Atkins (Douglas), and Charles Silverman (Melissa), grandchildren Rutherford, Bennett, and Jack Atkins, Eli and Riva Blinderman, Kelly, Daryn, and Carly Gerson, and Madison, Beck, and Scarlet Silverman. He also leaves behind many beloved family members, friends, and his loyal labradoodle, Murphy.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at 1:00pm at Church and Allen Funeral Home, 136 Sachem St., Norwich, CT followed by burial at Hebrew Benevolent Cemetery #3, 62 Middle Road in Preston, CT.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Backus Cancer Center 326 Washington Street Norwich Ct. 06360, or a charity of your choice. Please visit www.churchandallen.com to leave an online tribute or condolence.
