Betty was born in Norwich on May 21, 1933 the daughter of Ernest and Avah (Monroe) Franklin. She spent her whole life in the South Plymouth area and attended the old school in Kirk and then the Norwich High School from which she graduated the top of her class.
Throughout her life Betty was a faithful Christian woman and was dedicated to her family and to her church. She was an extremely pleasant, giving and caring woman. There was never a bad word spoken about anyone, instead she would say “they must be having a bad hair day” and go on about her business. Betty welcomed neighbors and friends into her kitchen and there over cups of coffee or a meal she would listen, encourage, advise or pray, whatever was needed. Many people have benefited from a visit with Betty. Throughout her life she filled many roles; wife, mom, grandma, homemaker, daycare and healthcare provider, waitress, teacher and writer. She always worked tirelessly in the background and rejoiced in the accomplishments of others. People knew that she loved them and if she said that she would pray for them she meant it. The world today would be a better place if there were more people like “Aunt Betty” around.
On February 28, 1955 in Norwich she married Lewis Somers who survives. Besides her husband Lew of South Plymouth, she is survived by her children Steven (Marjorie) Somers of No. Norwich, Julie Clark of Sherburne and James (Betty) Somers of Plymouth. Also surviving is her twin sister Bessie Somers of So. Plymouth, 9 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren along with nieces, nephews and cousins.
Betty was predeceased by her granddaughter Shyanne Somers, sisters Edith Rogers and Lena Edwards, brothers Grover and Patrick Calvert and son-in-law Douglas Clark.
In keeping with Betty’s wishes there will be no formal services.
Arrangements are with the R.J.Fahy Funeral Home.
