Doris M. Moon, a life-long resident of Chenango County, died peacefully in the early-morning hours of December 21, 2022 at the Senior Living Center at Chenango Memorial Hospital. She was 100 years old.
Doris was born in Sherburne on October 19, 1922, one of 14 children born to Earl and Jennie (Harvey) Primmar. Growing up in Norwich, she attended Norwich area schools.
On October 18, 1940, Doris was united in marriage with Ernest D. Moon Sr. They shared 64 years together until his death on May 1, 2004.
After her schooling, Doris worked in the knitting mill in Little Falls, NY, before working in the Jonathan Logan dress factory. She and Ernest returned to Norwich in 1949, where Doris made their home and raised their children. In 1955, she returned to working, on the assembly line at Norwich Shoe Co., where she remained until 1969.
In 1971, Doris and Ernest bought the general store in Plymouth, where Doris managed the store while Ernest managed the rented apartments on the second floor of the building. They would eventually move into the apartments themselves in 1981. As a “side Job,” Doris also did housekeeping for several local families.
In her leisure time, Doris enjoyed crafts, taking leisurely walks, and bowling (which she enjoyed doing into her early 80’s). She loved flowers, and very much enjoyed the solace of tending to her flower garden. She also took time to assist many local seniors, accompanying people to appointments, grocery shopping, housekeeping, and other maintenance tasks.
Doris is survived by her children, Norma Jean Smith of Norwich, Patricia Ann Toomey of Camillus, Constace May (Wylie) Craig of South Carolina, Jane Marie Huntley of Beaver Meadow, and Ernest Duane Moon Jr. of Norwich; 46 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest “Ernie” Moon; her son, Richard Ernest Moon and his wife Donna; her grandson, Robert Smith; her sons-in-law, Erskine Smith, Nathan Huntley, and William Toomey; as well as all of her brothers and sisters.
Private funeral services for Doris will be held at the convenience of the family. She will be laid to rest with her husband Ernie in the spring in Plymouth “South Side” Cemetery, Plymouth.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Doris’s memory may be made to the Plymouth Cemetery Association, 141 Reservoir Rd., South Plymouth, NY, 13844, or to the Plymouth Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 112, Plymouth, NY, 13832.
