Memorial Nursing Home of New Berlin, where she had made her home since Sept. of 2005.
The daughter of Curtis and Cora Mae Squires Hinckley, Dorothy was born in Dec. of 1922
in Norwich, where she grew up and attended school. She and her husband, Clarence Nichols,
were married in Norwich on Nov. 3, 1945. After their marriage, Dorothy and Clarence lived for
a time on Long Island and in Pennsylvania prior to returning to Chenango County. They lived
for over 20 years in Beaver Meadow, where Dorothy continued to reside until entering the
nursing home. A “little but mighty” lady, Dorothy made up for her size by being a bit feisty.
While she occasionally could have a short temper, she was basically a tolerant person whose goal
was to care for her family. She loved having her children and grandchildren around and was very
good with them.
Dorothy is survived by her children: Linda Clements of Norwich, Joyce Nichols of
Norwich, Janet Symonds and husband Martin of Sherburne, Lynn Nichols of Plymouth, and
Douglas Nichols of Norwich; her sister, Betty Rowlison of Greene; and grandchildren and their
spouses: Connie and Russell Thompson, Vicki and Rick Clements, Mark and Jessica Clements,
Candy Clements, Henry and Toni Edwards Jr., and Michael and Danielle Edwards. Several great
grandchildren and Dorothy’s sister-in-law, Marion Hinkley of Rome, also survive. Dorothy was
predeceased by her husband, Clarence, on July 20, 1989, and by her brother, James Hinkley.
Funeral services for Dorothy will be held on Sat., May 28, at 11 a.m. from the R. J. Fahy
Funeral Home. Henry Edwards of Norwich will officiate. Interment will be at the convenience
of the family. Friends are invited to call at the R. J. Fahy Funeral Home on Sat. from 10-11 a.m.
