
Born Dec. 20, 1934 in West Edmeston she was the daughter of Harold and Nolua Jenkins Newell. On July 4, 1954 she married John W. Baker who passed away Nov. 24, 2010. Joyce and her husband decided to venture out and in 1961 moved to Waterville where they opened C-Baker Chevrolet which they operated for several years. In 1965 she moved with her husband to Norwich where they opened the South Broad Gulf (Baker’s Service Center) which was located on the corner of South Broad and Eaton Ave. where she served as Sec.-Treas. for many years. Joyce also worked for Nancy Cushman in the Seasons Gift Shop located on South Broad St. and also for Skillins Jewlers for many years.
Joyce is survived by her sons John W. Baker and his wife Dianne of Chadds Ford, PA, Gregory Baker of Norwich, her grandchildren Timothy Baker and wife Catie of New York City, Lindsey and Molly Baker both of Chadds Ford, PA, Ferol Baker and Hannah and Brenna Baker all of Norwich. Also surviving is her sister Betty Heap of Earlville, her brother Jerry Newell of WY, along with several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband John, Joyce was predeceased by her brothers Ralph and David Newell.
A celebration of Joyce’s life will be held on Sat., Jan. 11, at 12:00 Noon from the Emmanuel Episcopal Church of Norwich. The Very Rev. Charles Taylor, Rector, will officiate.
Following the service Joyce’s family will greet friends at the rear of the church.
