Harvey L. Howell passed away surrounded by the family he loved on October 31, 2018 at Norwood Hospital. He was born October 2, 1926 in Canton, Ohio to Albert and Bernice Howell. Harvey and Deborah Wells were married in 1951 in Worcester, Massachusetts—where they were raised. He was committed to his family, especially his wife and partner of 67 years. Harvey and Deborah raised their five children in Huntington, NY; Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico; and Dover, MA. In 2015, they moved to New Pond Village in Walpole, MA.
Harvey graduated from Worcester Classical High School and Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and earned an MBA from Columbia University. He worked as an engineer at Fairchild Engine Division in Farmingdale, NY. In Puerto Rico, he was the plant manager for a subsidiary of Potter Instruments Company, and in Massachusetts he co-owned the Manchaug Corporation.
A fierce competitor in each of his chosen pursuits, Harvey ran hurdles at Classical High and Worcester Tech, raced sailboats in Puerto Rico, played tennis in the Boston area, and flew several aircraft, including a Pitts bi-plane. His favorite activity, though, was soaring, which he enjoyed for many years at Sugarbush in Warren, VT.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah, and their children, Lyn (Tom), Glenn, Jeff, Leslie (Rich), and Roger (Donna); 12 grandchildren: Will and Anne; Brian (Najla) and Steve (Sara); Wilhelmina, Dean and Edie; Adam and Rachael; Elizabeth, Michael and Justin. He is survived by many nieces and nephews, and was predeceased by three siblings, Albert, Bernice and Robert.
A private memorial event will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name can be made to a charity of your choice.
