

Known as “Papa” and “Bop” to his grandchildren, “Jim” to his friends and family, “Jimmy” to his sisters and “Professor” to his students, passed away suddenly but peacefully on Saturday, September 14, 2013. Jim was 69 years old and lived in Norwood with his loving wife of 44 years, Diane (Howard) Lampka. He was born in Buffalo, NY, son of the late Victor B. Lampka, M.D., and Emily P. (Swierczynski) Lampka, R.N. He held a M.S. in Health Science Education and Evaluation from State University of New York at Buffalo and a B.A. from Canisius College in Buffalo. Jim had a passion for physics and he dedicated his career of over 40 years to teaching the science of radiologic technology and the art of compassion to his students. He was also a prolific artist and blessed friends and family with his talent. Until his recent retirement, he was Director of the Lawrence Memorial/Regis College Medical Radiography Program in Medford. He previously taught at several colleges in MA and NY including Mass Bay Community College, Mass College of Pharmacy and Bunker Hill Community College. In addition to teaching and administration, he delivered compassionate care to many patients as a radiologic technologist and MRI technologist, including at the New England Baptist Hospital in Boston and the V.A. Hospital in West Roxbury. He was a dedicated advocate for licensing and regulation at the national and state levels and served as a member and past president of the Massachusetts Society of Radiologic Technologists. He was also an active continuing education lecturer for several organizations.
Jim is survived by his daughter Kari M. (Lampka) Watson, her husband, George and his grandchildren Ella and Liam of Sutton and his son Justin V. Lampka, his wife, Sarah Clapham and his grandson Jude of Jamaica Plain. He was the brother of Judy Karovski, R.N. of West Seneca, NY, and Sue Brooker, of Lancaster, NY. He was the brother in-law of Nick Karovski, the late Bob Brooker, Bill Howard and his wife Sue and Marlene Stuhr and her husband Bob, all of NY, and Lorie Howard and her late husband, George, of FL. He is also survived by many loving, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
A service in Jim’s memory will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 3:00 PM at the Gillooly Funeral Home, 126 Walpole Street (Rte 1A), Norwood. Calling hours will be held prior to the service on Saturday from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will be private.
