Joseph lived his life with gratitude, a sense of humor, a hard work ethic and the notion of putting family first. Living through the Great Depression, his focus was on helping his family financially by selling newspapers for the Boston Globe. It is there that he became involved with the Burroughs Foundation, a Boston newsboys organization where he learned about conducting city government. Joseph held the position of Mayor of the Burroughs in 1936 affording him the opportunity to travel to other cities and meet with political dignitaries. Through the Burroughs Foundation, he spent most of his summers at Agassiz Village in Poland, Maine--a time he cherished.
Joseph was a great storyteller and historian. He would share endless stories of what life was like having been born around the time of the Influenza Epidemic of 1919 and both World Wars.
During World War II, Joe contributed to the war effort working in multiple shipyards in the Metro Boston area. He, along with his brother Tony, owned a fruit store on Hanover Street in Boston for many years. He eventually found his career in retail at the Jordan Marsh Company where he worked for 45 years.
Joseph is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Mildred (Pinelli) Campo; his loving children, Carolyn Campo of Wrentham; Gregory Campo and his wife Cynthia of Wrentham; Lorraine Shamon and her husband Bill; his adored grandchildren, Nicholas Campo and his wife Maud of Scituate; Christoper Campo of Wrentham; Tyler Campo and Jessica Kaufman of Providence, RI; Stephen Boudrow of Millis; and Joseph Shamon of Atlanta, GA, and his two cherished great-granddaughters. We have been blessed to call him husband, father, and grandfather and he will truly be missed.
Services will be held privately through Gillooly Funeral Home, Norwood.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Joseph’s honor to Agassiz Village, a non-profit organization that provides opportunities to children in underserved communities in Massachusetts: 185 Dean Street, Norwood, MA 02062 or the Hospice Foundation, either online at [email protected] or by mail to Hospice Foundation of America, 1701 L Street NW, Suite 220, Washington, DC 20036.
