Michael McDonough

Michael “Mike” McDonough, a lifelong resident of Norwood, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, April 20, 2025 at the age of 63.

Beloved son of the late Charles and Phyllis (Condon) McDonough. Devoted husband of Barbara (Whelan) McDonough of Norwood, and loving father to Natalie, Michael, Brian, and Allison. He was the youngest brother of Catherine and her husband Joseph Hudson of Barnstable; Charles and his wife Joanne of Hanson; Patrick and his wife Susan of Norwood; Joseph and his wife Jeanmarie of Norwood; the late David and his surviving wife Sandy of Walpole; and the late Faye McDonough of Norwood. He is survived by his sisters-in-law, Mary Jean McDermott and Patricia McManus, and by many nieces, nephews, cousins, former wrestlers, and fellow firefighters, especially his brothers from Group 2.

Mike proudly served the Town of Norwood as a Firefighter for nearly 40 years. During his career, he served as President of the Norwood Firefighters Local 1631 and organized many fundraisers to support local charities. Mike took great pride in his job helping others and enjoyed singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Norwood Fire events. Many also knew him as “Coach.” He was head coach of the Norwood High School wrestling team for over 20 years, with the win of the Bay State League Title in the 1989-1990 season being one of his greatest accomplishments, along with the most wins in program history.

Mike was a major contributor to the town, but loved his family and friends more than anything. We are grateful for the joy, wit, and laughter he brought to each and every one of us. He will be lovingly remembered.

Services from the Gillooly Funeral Home, 126 Walpole Street (Rt. 1A) NORWOOD on Friday April 25, at 9:30 AM. Funeral Mass in St. Timothy's Church, Norwood at 10:30. Visiting Hours in the Funeral Home on Thursday from 3-8 PM. Interment Highland Cemetery, Norwood.
