

Dr. Sofia was born in Baltimore, Maryland to Michele and Giovanna (Dell’Uomo) Sofia. She attended Most Precious Blood Catholic grade school and The Catholic High School of Baltimore and graduated with highest honors in 1975. She attended Loyola College (University) Maryland graduating cum laude in 1979. Dr. Sofia earned her medical degree from the University of Maryland Medical School in Baltimore (1984) and went on to complete a residency in general surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry New Jersey (UMDNJ), in Newark, NJ where she was chief resident. Following her residency, Dr. Sofia entered private practice in Fall River, MA and had affiliations with St. Ann’s Hospital and Charlton Memorial Hospital where she was a board-certified general surgeon.
During her time at St. Ann’s Hospital, Dr. Sofia became Chief of Surgery and founding member and Medical Director of the Robert F. Stoico, FIRSTFED Center for Breast Care from 2001-2016. She was a longtime supporter of St. Ann’s Hospital and was a committed member of The Friends of St. Ann’s Hospital where she served as President for many years. She was instrumental in raising thousands of dollars for The Breast Care Center and was recognized several times for her personal philanthropic commitment to St. Ann’s Hospital.
Dr. Sofia was a beloved practitioner to her patients and colleagues for her kind and caring demeanor and total commitment to her patients’ care and recovery. Her skill as a surgeon was well known and respected by all. She was a devout Catholic and committed member of her parish the Cathedral of Mary of the Assumption. She was loved dearly by her family and friends for her selflessness, caring, generosity and the unconditional love she gave to everyone that crossed her path.
Dr. Sofia is survived by her brothers, Michael J. Sofia, PhD (spouse Charleen), and John M. Sofia (spouse Jean) nieces and nephews Jacqueline Sofia (spouse Nolan Trowe), Michelle DeGenova (spouse Vinny), Jason Sofia and Blaz Sofia (spouse Sarah) and grand-nephew and -niece Theodore and Penelope.
Visitation will be Friday February 7, 2025 at Hathaway Family Funeral Home, 1813 Robeson Street, Fall River, MA 02720 and a Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10am February 8, 2024 at the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption, 327 Second St, Fall River, MA 02721.
A graveside service will be held at Gardens of Faith Memorial Gardens in Baltimore, MD, on Saturday, February 15, 2025 at 11:00 AM.
