Fred was born in Muskegon Michigan to Elizabeth (Betty) and John Bader on September 29, 1947, both of whom have predeceased him. He most recently celebrated his 56th wedding anniversary with the love of his life, Ann, who he met at a student union dance as an undergraduate at the University of Michigan. They were married the summer after their graduation in 1969.
After marrying, Fred and Ann moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota so Fred could continue his studies in chemical engineering. While he was pursuing his PhD at the University of Minnesota, they welcomed their son Fredric Robert (Rob). They then returned to the University of Michigan where he worked as a professor and welcomed their daughter Ann.
Fred ultimately left the academic world to pursue a long and meaningful career in the biopharmaceutical industry. While working at Upjohn in Kalamazoo Michigan, they welcomed their daughter Kathleen. Over his brilliant career, he worked at a host of pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies where he carried significant roles in the development and manufacture of biotherapeutic products from their inception. He was a problem solver through and through, and he believed in the power of science and medicine to make peoples’ lives better. Both personally and professionally, he was passionate about doing the right thing for people and touched many lives—be it through life-saving medicines, a silly joke to lift someone’s spirits, or facilitating meaningful and life-impacting opportunities for others.
While living in Andover, MA, Fred and his family took on the role of host family for Christina Bracero. She had moved from the Bronx to attend Andover High School through a program called A Better Chance. Fred acquired the affectionate nickname “HF” (or “Host Father”) at this time, and Christina became a member of the family.
Fred was known for advocating for the underdog with a sparkle in his eye. He loved puzzles, golf, nature, and seeing the world - whether that be a good boating trip, a hike in the forest or desert, or trips around the globe. He had a wonderful sense of humor and laugh, which he kept right up to the end. He also enjoyed creating and carrying on family traditions like making his Mom’s pancakes made famous at Bader's Pancake House in Indian River Michigan.
Fred is survived by his wife, Ann, his children and their families; Rob and son Nicholas Bader of Baltimore, MD, Kathleen Bader and Gareth Rixton of Tucson, AZ, and Ann and Timothy Subashi of Mystic, CT, and their children Benjamin and Amanda Subashi of Fairfield, CT (as well as their two daughters, Frances and Eloise), Bethany Subashi of Essington, PA, and Kathryn Subashi of Mystic, CT.
He is also survived by his host daughter Christina Bracero of New York City, NY, and her family, Sierra Bracero and Kevin Claypoole of Bethesda, MD, and their son, Sergio.
He is also survived by his siblings; John and Linda Bader of Michigan, Dorothy and Richard Lenard of Wisconsin, triplets, Tom and Lynne Bader of Michigan, Jeanne Marie and Roger Waterson of Michigan, and Robert and Dottie Bader of Pennsylvania. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Kathryn in 1961 and daughter-in-law Karen Edsell in 2024.
A private gathering is planned for immediate family to be followed by a memorial service and gathering in Michigan over the summer to celebrate his incredible life.
