Dear Lucy!
The notice ofthe passing of your dear husband, Hans Goedicke, has deeply touched me and my wife personally, but also the many friends of the German-Austrian Society.  On the many trips with you and Hans, to the former Old-Austrian Lands,Hans' fundamental and sometimes humorous comments were always an enrichment of the trip's program.  Through his amiable way Hans has won many friends in his second home Austriaand they will miss him very much.
The passing away of Hans leaves a very large gap in our Society.-What was past does not return, however, if it goes down shining, it shines back a long time!the great German author Wolfgang Goethe states in a proverb.  Hans was not only a great personality, but also a great scientist and the traces of his work, like the many publications, the Dr. Hans Goedicke Trust for Egyptology in Vienna and much more, will remain as a great legacy for future generations.
However, our sincere sympathy now goes to you, dear Luzy.  We are with you in our thoughts and feelings in these, for you such sad, times. 
Your dear Hans will always remain in our fondest remembrances.  We send you our sincere greetings, also in the name of the many friends of the German-Austrian Society and theFriendship Circle Passau-Krems.

Die Nachricht vom Tode deines lieben Gatten, Dr. Hans Gdicke,  hat mich und meine Frau persnlich, aber auch die vielen Freunde in der Deutsch-sterreichischen Gesellschaft tief getroffen. Bei den vielen gemeinsamen Reisen mit Hans und mit dir, liebe Lucy,  in die Lnder "Altsterreichs" waren seine fundierten, mitunter auch launigen  Kommentare, stets eine Bereicherung des Reiseprogrammes. Durch seine liebenswrdige Art hat dein Hans in seiner zweiten Heimat "sterreich" viele Freunde gewonnen, die ihn  sehr vermissen werden.
Der Tod deines lieben Gatten hinterlsst in unserer Gesellschaft eine groe Lcke.-Aber "Was vergangen kehrt nicht wieder, aber geht es leuchtend nieder, leuchtet's lange noch zurck!"
Unser aufrichtiges Mitgefhl gilt vor allem dir, liebe Lucy. Wir sind mit unserem Fhlen und Denken in diesen Tagen bei dir.

the very sad news focused our thoughts onto your situation. For you it is lost that nobody can fill in. We know you both since the lucky days we have been able to spend with you in your summer-house in the Wachau. Some years ago we have seen you the last time, but Hans has informed us on your bad situation and later on his own. May HE give you the force to bear the strokes. We can only pray for your peace. We will remember Hans as friend, colleague, and paternal guide. You always were on his side at that time.

Our thoughts are with you at this very sad time, we send you our love and condolences. We will never forget Hans. Since we first met him in Cairo in 1966 he has been an inspiration to us. I shall never forget the course I took on Egyptology from Dr. Goedicke.  He was a scholar and a brilliant teacher who inspired his students. Such a kind, patient man.

Dr Goedicke was kind enough to give his time and advice to me when I was lost in my research, as a master's student in London.  I feel great loss at his passing, and wish his wife my sympathy.

My sincerest sympathies to Lucy!.  The professor (always the Mudir to some of us) and Lucy were splendid hosts on the FOSTAT during that most enjoyable 1974 season at Giza. The Mudir's academic achievements are legion, and he was always generous with his encouragement and assistance to those needing guidance.
A truly great scholar and gentleman, the Mudir will be missed. May he rest in peace!

I am profoundly sorry to learn of the death of Hans for whom I had the greatest admiration and regard. He was great Egyptologist and Teacher. Thank You for Your hospitality. I know there is little I can say to lessen Your grief, but I'd like You to know You have my deepest sympathy in Your bereavement. You BOTH are always in my heart!

Lucy and Hans were a loving and charming couple, and  it was always a great pleasure to spend time with them, either in Baltimore, Imbach or Spain. Hans was a professor in the true sense of the word, always encouraging his students to be independent and think for themselves. He left behind a large number of significant contributions to egyptology and many good friends that will keep his memory alive.

Many years ago Hans Goedicke knew about the interest of some Spanish students to study Egyptology in the US, among them me. In one of his courses in Madrid he showed much interest and support for my plans and committed to help. Not only he made sure I could contact people and apply for programs but he invited me to his house in Baltimore where we discussed ideas, plans his hospitality, interest and dedication to young scholars for their education was impressive. I must thank you, Lucy, and Hans for your support, interest and welcome to the US. I will always remember Prof. Goedicke's sense of humor, hospitality, and his passionate dedication to Egyptology. He will not be forgotten.

Lucy: We are all at a loss for words as those who knew Hans all loved him so much.He was a great friend to many. I recall fondly our time on the Fustat on the Nile and our stay at the Mena House near the pyramids when we were digging near the 3rd pyramid at Giza in 1972 and 74. Also the great time you both showed Judith and me in Vienna at your place in the country-that was a real treat. To say that Hans will be missed is an understatement. His writing will last to enlighten students for years to come. We are all so sorry for your and our loss.

Hans Goedicke's work inspired me. He will be missed.

Dear Lucy -- Please accept my condolences on the death of Hans. As a young Egyptology student at Johns Hopkins more than 20 years ago, he had a formative influence on me, and I remember many evenings of hospitality and conversation at your home. One thing that Hans always made his students and colleagues do was think -- which is the most important thing a scholar can do! He will be missed.

My condolences to the family of Dr. Prof. Hans G. Goedicke. I never had the opportunity to meet him and know him personally. But he has always been a model in my research activities and the first to offer help and support in a research of mine, when nobody believed in it. Dr. Goedicke used to come up to Toronto every fall for the SSEA Conference.  A paper he gave on Scholars' Day was the first serious Egyptological talk i'd ever heard.  At the time, i hardly understood the issues he was discussing, but i determined to study so that i'd be better prepared for his next talk.  I was never disappointed.  His erudition was matched by his kindness and generosity to students.

Dr. Goedicke was such a gentleman, so kind and happy.  I enjoyed talking with him on a variety of subjects.  He loved his family and you were so good to him.  This sweet, wonderful man will be missed.

What wonderful neighbors Hans and Lucy were to us on Cloverhill Road.  We remember warm hospitality, good wine, much laughter, and beautiful azaleas.

it was so sad to hear about the death of Hans. He was such a good friend and mentor for my husband Matthias and me. I still can hear his voice in my ear and the stimulating discussions with him.
