Born in Baltimore, MD, September 13, 1952 the only child to Shirley Ruth Yoor nee Lohn & Joseph Yoor, Sr., married July 31st, 1976 at St. Rita’s Church to Rosemary (Kip) Yoor nee McClure and father to Kelsey Yoor.
Joe leaves behind not only a wife and daughter but a lasting legacy in Baltimore through his decades of graphic design (as sole proprietor of New World Graphics) and exhibit production with his close friend and collaborator, Prof. Larry Gibson. From displays on Thurgood Marshall housed in the University of Maryland Law Library to the world-renowned Read’s Drug Store & Civil Rights exhibit housed at Morgan State University and beyond, his work can be found all over Baltimore.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Joe designed the iconic “Baltimore: The City that Reads” benches, the Baltimore Progress newspaper and was the go-to graphic designer for many leading politicians and organizations. It is almost impossible to have lived in or around Baltimore and not have encountered a sign, a poster, an exhibit, etc. that Joe was not a part of.
He was a proud support of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and member of Trout Unlimited and those who knew Joe know he was a three-time cancer survivor and a fighter all his life. He leaves behind a wealth of loving family and friends, including his wife of 43 years, Rosemary (Kip) Yoor, and daughter, Kelsey Yoor.
A memorial service will be held by family and friends at Schimunek Funeral Home in Perry Hall on Tuesday, August 6 from 1p-2p, at which time a celebration of life will begin. As Joe was an avid boater, fisherman, outdoorsman and conservationist, in lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation in his name.
