Born in Surrey, England to Norman and Mary Mahony, Margaret possessed a wanderlust that took her across the Atlantic at the age of 18, when she took a job as a mother’s helper to a family in New Jersey. Following that employment, she traveled solo across the US via Greyhound Bus, supporting herself by taking temporary jobs along the way, and finally settled in San Francisco, where she found love with her first husband, Roland “Rolly” Ryan. The couple later moved to Novato and had three children. Sadly, Margaret became a widow at a young age. Her family meant everything to her. Left to raise her children alone, Margaret took solace in the strong Catholic faith that was the bedrock of her life.
Margaret's determination to pursue a meaningful career prompted her to resume her education, and she juggled family, job, and studies to earn her BBA from San Francisco State University. She contributed her talents at State, county, and city agencies, including the California PUC; Novato Fire District, City Council, and Sanitary District; Marin County Board of Supervisors, Builders' Exchange, and finally the Public Works Department, from which she retired.
Margaret re-married in 2002 to Peter Bohan. With him, she was a longtime active parishioner of both Our Lady of Loretto and St. Anthony’s Churches in Novato. In retirement, she was an avid traveler, enjoying trips at home and abroad; an enthusiastic Zumba and country-western dancer; and a fanatic Scrabbler.
Margaret is survived by her husband of 13 years, Peter Bohan, her children Mary Ryan, Frank Ryan (Caitlin), Dan Ryan (Holly), her siblings Teresa Mahony and Martin Mahony (Sally), her stepdaughters Mary Ann Young (Wade) and Megan Bohan, two step-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her first husband Roland Ryan, and her brothers Michael and Francis Mahony.
We invite Margaret's friends to a visitation (5 p.m.) and vigil service (7 p.m.) on Sunday, May 22 at Keaton’s Redwood Chapel, 1801 Novato Blvd, and to a Mass of the Resurrection at Our Lady of Loretto Church in Novato on Monday, May 23 at 11 a.m. The interment of Margaret’s urn will take place at Valley Memorial Park in Novato on Wednesday, May 25 at 11 a.m.
Arrangements entrusted to Keaton’s Redwood Chapel of Marin.
