DAVID JOHN DERENZO
August 4, 1951 – April 22, 2016
“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”
2 Timothy 4:7
David passed away at his Schererville, Indiana home after a courageous 2 ½ year
battle with esophageal cancer. Remaining a fighter until the end he is no longer in
pain. Now sleeping peacefully in a better place
Preceded in death of his parents, Stanley and Alice Derenzo; David is survived by
his wife Doreene, stepsons Benjamin and Timothy Wierzgacz, half-brother Steven
(Carol), several cousins and numerous in-laws who were more like brothers and
sisters, and so many other close relatives and friends. He said happiness came
from the family and friends around him. The love of family provided a wealth of
importance and strength to him.
Having no complaints or regrets for the life he lived other than not meeting his
wife, Doreene sooner. He believed he was given a second chance in what this
world had to offer when they married on September 29, 2013. Although they did
not have the quantity of years together, they did have quality years. He remained a
dedicated and loving husband to Doreene. David was also very proud to call
Benjamin and Timothy his stepsons; seeing them grow through the years and
become such strong individuals.
David was a driven professional and loved the work that he was involved in at the
Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital and the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center. As their
Radiation Safety Officer, work was forever on his mind.
Music however, was indeed David's true lifelong passion. It was his world.
Family and friends alike believe that his music is what kept him going and made
his drive for life that much stronger. He cherished the bonds he formed with the
two most recent bands that he played in, Granite Creek and Decades Band Nwi.
David was also a long-time sports fan, whether they were winning or not. Chicago
sports teams (Cubs, Bears, Hawks, and Wolves) offered him some of his most
relaxing moments as well.
“When through one man a little more love and goodness, a little more light and
truth come into the world – then that man's life has had meaning.” We would all
be happy to say that David's life had real meaning for all of us. He will forever
live on in our hearts and and our memories.
