Raymond David Piirto, a quiet and hardworking man who lived life on his own terms, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2025, in Coarsegold, California, where he had recently moved to be closer to family. He was 85 years old.
Born on January 10, 1940, in Trout Creek, Michigan, Raymond was the youngest of 11 children born to Jacob and Lempi Piirto. He was raised on the Piirto family farm in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where he learned the value of hard work, perseverance, and humility.
As a young man, Raymond played baseball and basketball throughout high school. In his early twenties, he ventured west to Reno, Nevada, in search of work and opportunity. He found both at the Kmart warehouse, where he drove a forklift for 30 years. He enjoyed playing softball on the company team for many years. Known for his faithfulness and responsibility, Raymond never missed a day of work and never called in sick. True to his character, when it came time to retire, he told no one—quietly walking out on his final day, avoiding any recognition or farewell.
Raymond was married in Reno and became the proud father of three daughters—Diane, Denise, and Cheryl. In 2004, he moved to rural Dayton, Nevada, where he built his own home and found joy in watching wild horses roam across his land and soaking in the breathtaking mountain views. He enjoyed gardening and taking care of his plants and trees.
He lived a content and simple life, marked by kindness, humility, and a deep appreciation for the peace and beauty of nature. He didn’t seek the spotlight—he simply lived a life of quiet integrity.
Raymond was preceded in death by his beloved daughter Diane in 2022. He is survived by his daughters Denise and Cheryl, who will carry his memory with love and gratitude. He also leaves behind his beloved cat, Smokey.
