Richard proudly served his country as a paratrooper in the United States Army with the 173rd Airborne Brigade. As a member of the “173rd Herd,” he formed lifelong bonds with his fellow soldiers and remained deeply proud of his service.
In 1968, he married the love of his life, Dilice (Elias) Bayley, and together they shared 58 years of marriage. They built a life in Southern California, raising their two children, Dawn Bayley Smith-Williams (Ryan) and Jason Bayley (Shawna). Richard owned and operated an automotive shop for over 30 years alongside his cousin and best friend, Gil Gingras, before retiring to Coarsegold, California.
Richard lived a life of adventure. He loved his “toys” and especially enjoyed spending time with his wife, family, and friends camping and traveling together, creating lasting memories along the way.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Steve and Claire Bayley; his sister, Joan Otto; and his son-in-law, Herman Smith. He is survived by his wife, Dilice; his children; his grandchildren, Raven Smith (Alexis Victoria), Hunter Smith (fiancée Brooklyn Hotstelter), and Nathan Bayley; and his great-grandchildren, Violet Smith and Santana Smith.
Richard will be remembered for his quick, unexpected humor and the laughter he brought to those around him. He lived by the motto, “If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it,” a reflection of the strength, love, and resilience he carried throughout his life. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Services will be held on Friday, May 8, 2026 at 2pm at the Oakhill Cemetery in Oakhurst, CA. Repass will be at the Bayley residence in Coarsegold afterwards.
