Grace Musni Shadeck, loving mother and grandmother, sister, and friend passed away on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, in Ocala, Florida, under hospice care. Although her loved ones are heartbroken by the loss of such a beautiful woman, we know she is now singing praises to Jesus her Lord in heaven. She was preceded in death by Leo, her husband of 51 years, and her siblings Carmen Musni, Natividad “Nancy” Dumlao, and Mariano Musni, Jr. Grace is survived by her daughter Karen (Jeremy) Young and grandchildren Jillian and Jack Young who affectionally called her Gigi. She is also survived by her siblings Anthony (Myrna) Musni and Theresa Tacchi. Grace will also be missed by her 2 step-daughters Rinska (Simon) Flores and Livia Chinea, numerous other family members, and friends.
Grace was the 4th child born is San Francisco, California, to Filipino immigrants Mariano and Ildefonsa Nolasco Musni on October 23, 1937. She attended St. Vincent High School and graduated in 1955. She made her way to Chicago and graduated nursing school in 1961. After that, Grace moved to the Panama Canal Zone where she made her home for several years.
Grace made a difference in people’s lives as a caring, compassionate nurse; her strong work ethic and dedication enabled her to become Assistant Chief of Nursing for Gorgas Army Hospital. Grace retired after faithfully working for the federal government for 27 years and then moved with Leo to Ocala, Florida, in 1994.
Always keeping busy, Grace was a nurse for the Marion County Jail and then co-taught the Certified Nursing Assistant course at Marion Technical College. She led many students to begin a fruitful career in patient care. She later worked for Nursecore to help people qualify for long-term care insurance. Grace also volunteered a lot of her time; she served alongside Leo, with Marion county CERT, which was a citizen-driven disaster response team. In addition, she volunteered for Munroe Regional Medical Center on their community outreach bus and as a parish nurse. She also reached her neighborhood by doing blood pressure screenings for the congregation at St. Jude and delivering food with Meals on Wheels. Grace even served on the Resident Council @ The Windsor of Ocala, one of the assisted living facilities she stayed at.
Throughout her time working and volunteering, Grace kept up with her love of singing. In Panama, she was part of the church choir and a member of the Panama chapter of Sweet Adelines. In Ocala, she loved to sing with The Ocala Harmony and even performed Handel’s Messiah with the Ocala Symphony Chorus. If there was one thing Grace was known for, it was her joyfulness to break into song whenever she found the opportunity. And don’t forget, it was always in harmony.
Grace always had a love for playing games. She enjoyed the competitive comradery during a friendly game of poker, Pinochle, Scrabble, and Skip Bo. Even after Mom moved into her assisted living apartment, she had fun participating in Snack Bingo, and Rummicube. And with our family, there was always a game of Go Fish, chess, or Uno as well. Mom love playing, but you had to make sure you followed the rules ….No cheating!!
Grace enjoyed a good conversation and was fun-loving by nature. She was genuinely interested other people’s lives and what they thought. She was a kidder and had the knack for delivering subtle sarcasm. She was always the cool cucumber and never held a grudge. She took pride in her grandkids and loved having a good time. We will truly miss our weekly church outings and lunches, Gigi. See you in heaven when Jesus calls us home.
