

Laverne Butler Russell, age 92, of Ocala, Florida, passed away on Saturday December 15, 2018. Laverne was born July 16, 1926, to parents Benjamin Franklin Butler and Lillie Mae Johnson Butler in Hickory, Kentucky.
She graduated from Murray State University, Murray Kentucky with a Bachelor's degree in elementary education. She worked for many years as a teacher and later served as a nursing home activities director, most recently at Oakhurst Manor in Ocala. She was married to Gene Russell and together they had three children— Max, Mark, and Karen. She was a loving mother and friend and went out of her way to help others. For many years she celebrated her faith at First United Methodist Church in Belleview.
She was an expert quilter, a great seamstress, and a wonderful cook. She loved to spend time outdoors, walking and taking in life and nature.
Laverne is preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sisters Vodene Eddings and Betty Atherton; a brother Ben Butler; and nephew Richard Atherton.
Laverne is survived by her children, Max Russell (spouse David D'Alessandris), Mark Russell (wife Connie), and Karen Russell. She is further survived by her grandchildren, Kate Samy (husband Wael), Benjamin Hunter, Brianne Ferguson (husband Joe), Charles Costello, and great grandson Keaton Riley Costello. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, friends, and other family.
A Celebration of Life for Laverne will be held Sunday, December 23, 2018, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 5740 South Pine Ave, Ocala, FL 34480.
A private Graveside Committal Service will follow the Celebration of Life at a later date.
