Edith got her degree at Newark State Teachers College and started teaching grades 3-6 at Franklin School here in Newark. Her love was the 3rd grade and she taught at that level for many years. Later she matriculated at Montclair State College to get a Masters degree in Counseling and was a guidance counselor at Barringer High School until she retired. In the midst of this Edith was also a franchise owner and led a group for Diet Control Centers. She was a whirlwind goer and doer, never stopping until the day she fell three weeks into this November.
She married Jacob Cohen in 1945 and had three boys, Joseph, Sandford, and Edward, from 1949 through 1959. Their first home was in Newark, but then moved to neighboring Elizabeth until 1963, when they moved to West Caldwell.
On June 25, 2009 Edith moved from her condo on Roseland Ave, Caldwell, to Seabrook Village in Tinton Falls. She fit perfectly into that community where she was the President of the Seabrook Jewish Community for four years. Her time there was absorbed by Mahjongg, cribbage, and canasta, calling and playing bingo and poker games. She also frequented trips to see plays in New York and New Jersey. She volunteered at Saint Barnabas Hospital in Livingston, and in an elementary school, one day a week for two years, where the kids and the teacher loved her presence.
Edith was preceded in death by her husband Jacob and sister Joan and half sister Rita. She is survived by sisters Carol, and Helen, half brother Joseph Macnow and half sister Samantha, sons, Joseph wife Carole, Sandford wife Josefina, and Edward wife Beth, granddaughters, Yliana, Celia, Brea, and grandsons Jacob, Max, Nathanael, Benjamin, Andrew, and Neil great granddaughter Madelyn and greatgrandson Jake Seth.
