Born on December 26, 1947, in Neptune, NJ, Bob grew up in Deal and attended Deal School, Asbury Park High School, and Monmouth College, where he was a member of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. He was a devoted husband to his college sweetheart, Susan (Weinberg) Hirshfield, and a loving father to Marc Hirshfield and Shara Alter.
Bob was hard-working and dedicated to his family and friends. He spent 37 years in the family’s women’s clothing business and later owned and operated The I Catcher in Allenhurst, Bells in Toms River, and Bells in Point Pleasant, NJ. Despite his many responsibilities, he always made time for his loved ones.
A man of integrity, kindness, and generosity, Bob left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. Very patriotic and deeply proud of his country, he served in the Army Reserves, reflecting his strong sense of duty and commitment. His favorite moments were spent at the beach, enjoying a great meal at Jimmy’s Restaurant in Asbury Park, watching NFL football and his beloved Yankees, playing poker online, and relaxing by the pool. He also loved swimming laps (he was a champion swimmer starting at the age of 8), working out at the gym, talking politics, and catching up on FOX News.
He was predeceased by his parents, Miriam and Morton Hirshfield. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Susan; his son Marc (daughter-in-law Laurie Hirshfield); daughter Shara (son-in-law Josh Alter); and two cherished grandsons, Evan and Brent Hirshfield. He is also survived by his older brother Norman Hirshfield; sister Judi Hirshfield-Bartek; brother-in-law Elmer Bartek, brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Arnold Weinberg and his wife Susan; and many nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss him dearly.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 17th, 2025 at Bloomfield Cooper Jewish Chapel in Ocean Township, NJ at 11:00am. The Hirshfield family will be receiving friends beginning at 10:15 am. Shiva will be observed after the funeral service at the Hirshfield residence in Wayside on Friday afternoon and again on Saturday evening at sundown.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Wounded Warrior Project—charities close to Bob’s heart.
We take comfort in knowing that Bob’s legacy lives on through the lessons he taught, the love he shared, and the memories we will cherish forever.
