Chum was raised in Monahans, Texas, and then moved to Odessa in 1977. After becoming ill Chum retired from J Cleo Thompson in 2004, after 28 years of service.
Chum loved music and began playing the drums at age 7; he was a member of the First United Pentecostal Church of Odessa, where he was active in the church drama team, the music program, tape ministry, and served on the church board for many years. Although he loved music, his first love was his family.
Chum was a family man, building a home with the love of his life for 35 years, Carol Ann Eakin.
His two daughters, April and Amber, were the apples of his eyes. They went to work with him at early ages, learning to drive on oilfield roads long before they were legal to drive.
His nephew, J. D. "Bubba" spent many summers being his sidekick. There wasn’t a home improvement project that Chum couldn’t tackle; if Carol wanted a new kitchen, she got it. His main goal in life was to make sure his wife and daughters were well provided for and happy.
Survivors include his wife Carol Ann, daughters April Shipman and Amber Hogg; granddaughters Kali, Mackenzie and Paisley. His first grandson is due in February of 2014. Chum was also blessed with two son-in-laws, Shawn Hogg and Curt Shipman, whom he loved and cherished, liked sons. He was also survived by Mother Sue Olgin Smith of Monahans, sisters Brenda Smelser, Anita Tucker, Nelda Gunalda, Alisa Devokaitis, brothers-in-law David Smelser, Tim Tucker, Gene Gunalda, John Devokaitis and numerous other brothers and sisters-in-law.
He was preceded in death by his step-father Gilbert Olgin, mother-in-law Pat Clay, and brother Kenneth Eakin.
Visitation with the family will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 20, 2013, at Hubbard Kelly Funeral Home.
