Floyd Hammett, 79, of Odessa passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at his residence surrounded by adoring family and friends. He was born August 28, 1932 in El Paso to R. D. & Rosey (Cox) Hammett. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. In May 1991 he retired as a Captain with the Odessa Fire Dept. after 27 years of service. He lived his convictions and one was the importance of local community commerce. He owned several Odessa businesses including Hammett’s Automotive Body Shop, AAA Auto Glass & Windshield, and Hammett’s Purple Sage Ostrich Ranch. He married Velma Brawley December 27, 1964. He was a founding and active member of Victory Temple Assembly of God Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents, & sister, Inez Saunders.
His legacy is his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. The activities of holding a new great grandbaby and discussions involving animal husbandry were guaranteed to bring a smile to his face. He loved to hunt, fish, golf, and spend time with friends and family. Christmas time with his house full of family and friends was his favorite time of year, and the feeling was mutual; we just loved being with him. Our family patriarch will be missed for his grounded optimism, spiritual model, tender love, ready smile, problem solving consultation, and life wisdom.
He is survived by his wife, Velma Hammett of Odessa; children, Terry G. & Tammie Hammett, Richard D. & Karen Hammett, Wesley & Toni Brawley, Delana & David Henry, and Kimbra & Don Weiershausen; grandchildren, Jayson & Sheryl Hammett, Adam & Pam Lewis, Amy & Alex Campos, Tyler Brawley, Brittany & Roman Acosta, Steven Beamish, Landon & Sarah Henry, Matthew & Mandy Henry, Kylah & Michael Kotze, Erica Arteaga, Ashley & Ralfy Mendoza, Waylon & Tammie Weiershausen, Lennon & Christal Noland, Eric & Paula Damron, and Jolie & Scott Shazanskus; twenty-one great-grandchildren; brother, Euel Hammett and sister, Elizabeth & Olin Horne of Odessa. Special friends include Jay Chancy, Gene Little, and many others.

Pallbearers will be his Grandsons.
