

Gerardo “Jerry” Ortiz, 77, passed from this world on Saturday, February 11, 2012, at Hospice House of Odessa surrounded by his family and friends. He was born on July 14, 1934 in Stanton, Texas.He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother. As a proud Odessan he was a self employed painter. Jerry lived a full and spiritual life. He was always cheerful and was always willing to help anyone in need. He was a loving and devoted husband and father. Jerry was an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church where he was a Eucharistic Minister, lector, usher, religious education teacher, cursillista, member of the Holy Name Society and a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He also served as a Boy Scout Leader for his parish. Jerry served our community in many ways by volunteering at Hospice House, prison ministries, visitations to the sick, which included several nursing homes. He won several trophies in Billiards and Dominos. Jerry is survived by his wife of 53 years: Lucy Ortiz of Odessa; son: Andrew Ortiz of Dallas, sisters: Delia Tercero of Cedar Park, Alicia Hernandez of Sherman, Dora DeAnda of Odessa, Mary Neida Alvarado of Gerogetown and Gracie Deanda of Austin, numerous nieces and nephews. A Rosary was recited on Monday, February 13, at Odessa Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 10 am on Tuesday, February 14, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with the Reverend Joe Uecker officiating. Burial will follow at Ector County Cemetery Los Angeles Section. Our prayer is that Our Heavenly Father, Our Blessed Mother Mary, all the Angels and Saints welcome him into Heaven. The Ortiz family would like to give special thanks to Teresa Carrasco, Laura Castillo, the various nurses, Hospice House staff, Dora DeAnda, Knights of Columbus, Ismael & Mundo Hernandez, Odessa Funeral Home staff and to all those who brought food, flowers and kept us in their prayers.
