She was born December 5, 1936 in Wink, Texas to W.E. and Stella Rush. She was the oldest of three siblings. She graduated from Odessa High School in 1955. She enjoyed socializing with her classmates and took charge of organizing and planning all of her class reunions.
A fairy tale is never complete until the princess finds her prince charming. Ann Deaderick, one of Jan's best friends, who became her sister-in-law, set her up on a blind date to the Crystal Ball with her brother Ted Roden. Thus began a beautiful love story of the heart for a very special couple. Jan and Ted were married on January 18, 1980 and as happens in all good fairy tales, they lived happily ever after together. The way they loved and lived life to the fullest was evident to anyone who was around them and has been felt by their family and community alike.
Jan was the proud Mom of Pam and Steve Wall of Mansfield, and Joyce and Kenny Copeland of Odessa. Her favorite family time was being Grammy to her grandchildren Colby and Stephanie Henderson of Odessa, Brody and Maggie Henderson of Gardendale, Justin and Haymen Wall of Arlington, Jacob and Shelley Wall of North Richland Hills, and Alli Wall of Dallas. She was also Great Grammy to her great grandchildren Ryan Henderson, Ryker and Brinlee Henderson, and Rachel Wall. She also had three stepdaughters and their families, Rhonda McClary, Theo Olsen, and Cassie Vidal. She had two step grandchildren Kent and Kyle Copeland, nephew Franklin Deaderick, and sister-in-law Carolyn Roden.
She was preceded in death by her husband and prince charming Ted Roden, her parents W.E. Rush and Stella Fletcher, her sister Joyce Rush, brother Dwain Rush, and son Randy Whetstone.
Jan's family is extremely grateful for her wonderful and loving caregivers Virginia, Sharee, Lucille, and Mona. Also, her friend and physician Dr. Joel and Charlotte Adams and Dr. Abdul Kadir. Special thanks to Viola, her longtime friend and hairdresser, Rose who always made her smile, and Home Hospice.
Jan Roden was generous, loving, strong, kind, thoughtful, and a friend to all. Whether helping others, organizing events, or hosting family gatherings for all occasions, her charismatic personality was evident in everything she did. She loved traveling, her sorority, Elvis, Las Vegas trips and bowling with her longtime friends Charlotte, Clara, Marion, and Margaret. She took up golf later in life. Golf quickly became a passion and her favorite hobby. She played daily at Odessa Country Club with her friends and traveled all over the world playing famous golf courses with Ted. They loved going to their home in Colorado Springs and playing golf at The Broadmoor. When she wasn't on the golf course, she was also an avid bridge player. She was in Beta Sigma Phi for over 60 years. She served as an active board member of the Permian Basin Rehabilitation Center. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and MCH Women's Auxiliary. She was the first woman to serve on the Odessa Country Club board of directors. She was president of the Odessa Crystal Ball Foundation, a member of the Odessa Country Club Women's Golf Association, and served on the UTPB Development Board.
