Leon Allen Askins, age 77, of Odessa, earned his promotion to Heaven on Friday, January 22, 2016. He was surrounded by many family members as he drew his last breath on earth and his first in Heaven. Leon was soft-spoken and quick-witted. His little grin showed his spunkiness. He had nicknames for everyone he loved and made sure you knew he loved you. Leon loved his snapback caps and his big travel mug of coffee. He loved to talk politics. He loved playing his guitar and listening to ‘ol country music, but he loved God, his family, and his dogs most of all.
Leon retired from SMC after many years. He worked tirelessly for his beautiful wife and four daughters. Leon was preceded in death by his daughter Nita Mattson, and his parents Howard and Jesse Askins of Odessa. He is survived by his loving wife Nellie Askins, who was his world, along with his daughters Pamela Ward and husband, Jay of Gardendale, Sue Turner and husband, Robert of Midland, and Rita Kerley and husband, Craig of Cabot, AR. Also surviving are ten grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren, his sister Verneva VanWinkle of Odessa, and his brother Troy Askins of Hartford, AR.
His earthly absence will be deeply felt, but we rejoice in knowing he is with our Lord and Savior.
Family visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Sunday, January 24, 2016, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
