Betty was born May 14, 1929 in Parkersburg, West Virginia, the seventh of eight children of Francis Lee Wharton and Emma Blanche Stackpole. She is survived by her youngest brother Warren Wharton of Centerville,Ohio and by many nieces and nephews.
Betty was the first in her family to attain higher education, attending Potomac State College in WV, John Hopkins, Oklahoma State University, and Oklahoma University. She received a Masters of Science in Medical Technology and continued course work toward a PhD.
Betty worked as a medical technologist in Kansas during the Korean War and then moved to Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City where she worked for 31 years. She directed the renowned Mercy School of Medical Technology until her retirement when she closed the program.
Betty married Roy Javine in 1968 whom she declared “pursued her.” They were active in Surrey Hills Baptist Church and enjoyed traveling throughout the United States. Roy died suddenly in 2001.
Betty was an active woman who played golf nearly daily and won tournaments in her age group(s). She was an avid bridge player and mastered international computer bridge. She gardened and planted peach trees at every home. And she always had a dog (or two) she walked three times per day. Her physical activity served her well into her nineties.
Betty acquired the original COVID prior to the vaccine. Although she survived, her health was compromised and she moved to Southern Plaza Memory Care. We greatly appreciate the compassionate care the staff provided. In the last few weeks of her life, Good Shepherd Hospice cared for Betty at Southern Plaza. We are thankful for the patient, comforting care the staff provided to her death.
