Cherita was born on June 1, 1945, in Cheyenne, Oklahoma, to Lester and Velma (Powers) Walker. She graduated from Putnam City High School in 1963 and spent her early years in Oklahoma before moving to Texas in 1989. In 2020, she returned to Oklahoma, where she continued to build a life centered around family, love, and simple joys.
On February 15, 1964, Cherita married the love of her life, David Sterling Sherrill. They shared 62 devoted years of marriage until his passing on February 20, 2026. Together, they built a life rooted in love and raised one daughter, Dava.
Cherita found happiness in life’s quiet and meaningful moments. She loved country and old gospel music, and her favorite color was purple. Her perfect day was a beautiful spring day spent planting flowers or gathering with family during the holidays. She had a special gift for bringing joy to those around her, especially her family and her beloved pets, who always made her laugh.
A loving parent and a loyal friend, Cherita instilled in her family the importance of reading, learning, and pursuing a good education. Her warmth, kindness, and steady presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Cherita is survived by her daughter, Dava Sherrill Carson of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; numerous nieces and nephews; and the many cherished “fur babies” who were part of her life over the years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Velma Walker, and her husband, David Sterling Sherrill.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that friends and loved ones consider planting a tree in Cherita’s memory, honoring her love of nature and the beauty she found in life.
Cherita’s life was a testament to love, family, and the beauty found in everyday moments. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those she loved.
