

Hoyte was born November 3, 1929 in Smackover, Arkansas to H.D. and Vera Phillips. He lived in numerous small towns in Arkansas and East Texas growing up, as his father was in the oil business. Hoyte attended school most of his life in Chapel Hill, Texas. He graduated from Tyler High School and then went on to attend Tyler Junior College. There he achieved an associate's degree and played saxophone in the Apache band. Also, while attending Chapel Hill school, he met his bride to be, Mary Nell Foshee. They were married on May 6, 1950. Hoyte followed in his fathers footsteps and worked in the oil business his entire professional life for Sun Oil Company (Sunoco). He and Mary Nell lived in numerous small towns in East Texas before moving to Odessa, Texas where their son, Joe, was born in 1956. They then moved to Pampa, Texas in 1964. They resided in Pampa until 1972 when they moved to Oklahoma City. They attended First Baptist Church Oklahoma City for many years and are currently members of Surrey Hills Baptist Church.
Hoyte is survived by his spouse of 64 years, Mary Nell and their son Dr. Joseph H. Phillips, of the City. He is also survived by one brother, Glenn Phillips of Arp, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at All Souls Episcopal Church at 63rd and North Pennsylvania on Friday, July 11th at 2:00 pm. Dr. Wendell Lang of Surrey Hills Baptist Church will be delivering the eulogy.
Mr. Phillips ashes will be interred at the church columbarium immediately following the service.
