Jack (John William) Portman was called to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 19, 2023, at the age of 22. Jack was born August 1, 2000 to David and Stella (Cunningham) Portman. He attended Crossings Christian School and graduated from Heritage Hall. He then attended TCU where he studied economics.
Jack was whip smart, had a quick wit and contagious sense of humor, all topped off with a kind and tender heart. Although he was the king of practical jokers, they were never mean spirited, and he loved nothing more than when the joke was on him. He was a kid magnet. Neighbor children idolized him and little cousins adored him. Jack had the respect and admiration of his peers as well; elected president of his Phi Delta Theta pledge class, he took his responsibilities of leadership seriously.
Following Portman tradition, Jack earned his Eagle Scout and looked forward to annual summer trips to Vermejo Park Ranch with his Grandpa, dad, brother, uncles, and cousins. Even if the fishing wasn’t good, the company and big laughs always were. Jack enjoyed sports throughout his youth, earning his Junior Black Belt in taekwondo, and playing football, basketball, and baseball which his dad often coached. He continued to play football and baseball at Heritage Hall and was excited to be a part of a state championship baseball team. His true love was wakeboarding in which he competed nationally. Jack went on to be a part of the TCU club wakeboard team finishing first in competition against other universities. His passion led him to teach others at camps and behind the family's boat.
Jack was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt, fish, and simply enjoy God’s nature. His wakeboard and fishing pole were often in the back of his truck so not to miss any opportunity to cast a line or jump a wake. His love for nature was shared by his family and led them on many fun adventures from New Zealand to Alaska to Costa Rica creating great memories. Like his grandfather, his memories were captured with creative photos. Jack was a best friend to his brother Luke and a proud, protective and enthusiastic supporter of his sister Lainey. A devoted son, brother and friend, Jack was also a committed Christian who wasn’t afraid to share his faith.
Jack is survived by his parents, David and Stella, brother Luke and sister Lainey of Oklahoma City. He is also survived by grandparents William and Mary Lynne Portman of Oklahoma City and John and Gail Cunningham of Wichita Falls, TX, six uncles and their wives and scads of cousins.
A Celebration of his Life will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, April 28, 2023, in the chapel at Crossings Community Church in Oklahoma City. Jack's service will be live streamed at https://vimeo.com/event/3342125/7e4354f785. Memorial donations can be made to Heartline Oklahoma https://heartlineoklahoma.org/
