A lifelong resident of Norman, Bob attended St Joseph’s School before transferring to Norman High School where he was a member of the 1961 state Champion Football team, and remained a Tiger for life. Following his graduation in 1962 Bob attended the University of Oklahoma. He was a member of the Oklahoma National Guard from 1965 to 1971.
He married Nancy Blair Thompson on July 15th, 1966. They were married for 54 years, and had two wonderful children, Tiffany and Rob. Bob loved his family above all else, especially his grandchildren.
Bob enjoyed sports at all levels and volunteered in every capacity from coaching youth league teams, to refereeing high school football to running the clock at OU basketball games. Through his life, his favorite teams were the ones that his grandchildren played on. So much so that he set aside his loyalty to Norman High and cheered for the Timberwolves.
Bob loved a committee and whatever time he had leftover after spending time with family was dedicated to volunteering and civil service. He served three terms on Norman’s City Council before being elected Mayor of Norman. During his mayoral term the Oklahoma Conference of Mayors awarded him Mayor of the Year.
Bob never would’ve described himself as a creative person, but everything he did was from scratch both professionally and personally. He opened and operated businesses like The Thompson Company where he designed and printed custom business forms, and Thomas Paige Homes where he designed and built homes in the Rolling Meadows development. He also loved gathering his family around the table for homecooked meals, designing any home project on the back of a napkin, and working on his antique cars to take to the Canadian River Cruisers car club.
Bob was a member of First Christian Church where he served willingly in every capacity asked of him except preaching, and he would’ve tried that if needed. He was able to attend two inter-generational mission trips with his children and grandchildren.
Bob is survived by his wife Nancy. Daughter Tiffany and her husband Jerry Niblett, their son Trey and his wife Emma. Son Rob and his wife Laura Thompson, and their daughters Lexi and Lindsay. Brothers John (Marcia), Tucker (Becky), Frank (Diana), Joe (Sherri), Cotton (Kim), Toby (Diane), and two sisters Cindy Ferguson and Mary Bass (Alec). He will also be missed by his sisters-in-law Susan Blair and Jana Knott, and brother-in-law Scott Blair (Debbie).
