Margaret was born September 17, 1964, in Oklahoma City, the daughter of Kitty and Dick Champlin, sister to Kim and Chris. She attended St John’s Episcopal School, Heritage Hall, Central Innovative High School, and University of Oklahoma. Margaret was a member of the Osage Nation.
She was a founding member of the rock band Love Buffet where she sang and played the guitar. After debuting in OKC in the mid 1980’s, Margaret, the band now known as Vulgar and the Woodcutter, and their entourage, moved to San Francisco where they built a loyal fan base, playing many famous venues. With a promise of a record deal, they moved to Los Angeles, and eventually back to Oklahoma as the band Jubilee.
The hard lifestyle caught up with Margaret; after living a tough life in Austin, she returned to OKC and sobered up. It was at this point she became a new kind of rock star, inspiring so many others in AA.
Margaret never lost one ounce of humor, talent, or openness - she shared more of those qualities every day to those closest to her including besties from 5th grade, sister mama Barbara Cook of LA, her multitude of friends in meetings, her Belle Isle “dog park” pals, but most especially to her BFF and longtime brah Kari Hirst Starkey who she loved like a sister.
Margaret was preceded in death last May by her superhero mother, Kitty Champlin. She is survived by her father, Richard H. Champlin; sister Kim Champlin Searls and husband Thomas; brother Christian Paul Champlin and wife Jill; nephews Cameron Searls and Maxwell Champlin; niece Kendall Champlin; Aunt Candy Behl and cousin Katie, all her Graves cousins, and most exceptional dog Ace Boogie.
We all have our precious, hilarious memories we will hold forever, but Margy, damnit, we will miss you so much. Rest in euphoric peace you beautiful rockstar!
The family invites friends to a Celebration of Life on Saturday, March 30 from 1:00 – 3:00 pm featuring a tribute video at 2:00, at the Will Rogers Theatre, 4322 N Western Ave, Oklahoma City. Donations may be made in Margaret’s name to Bella SPCA www.bellaspca.org
