Nick was born on December 10, 1944 in Larned, Kansas. He graduated from Mountridge Rural
High School in 1962 and was a veteran of the 82nd Airborne Division in Ft. Bragg, North
Carolina. He was actively involved with his veteran community, speaking occasionally, and he
attended St. Francis Catholic Church. He was a seasoned carpenter and craftsman. Having a
natural talent for art, he loved drawing. He was also an avid student of history with a breadth of
knowledge he loved sharing with others. The great joys of his life were the walks through Will
Rogers Park with his youngest grandchild and the moments he shared with his children.
Nick is survived by his loving companion, Carolyn Dooley; elder sister Mary Jones and her
husband Dale; younger sister Phyllis Espinoza; son Steven Cole and his daughter, Stephanie;
daughter Andrea Mendoza-Williams and her children, Ellory and her husband Jeremy, Rainey,
Tillman, Manon, Afton, as well as her granddaughters, Ayla and Quinn; daughter Jessica Petitt
and her husband Bryce and their children, Logan, Hayden and his wife Bethany, and Kaelan;
son Justin Mendoza and his wife Hope and their children, Justin Il and his wife Lynn, Alexander,
Joshua, Daniel, Michael, Brittany, as well as their grandchildren, Johnny, June, Karlie and Ava;
son Drew Mendoza and his wife Dinah Morales and their children, Oswald and Ruby; daughter
Bonnie Mendoza; daughter Madison Johnson and her husband Kye and their child, Felix; as
well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whom he loved and admired.
Nick was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew C. Mendoza and Julia (Juarez) Mendoza;
sister, Leticia M. Leal; brother-in-law, Michael A. Espinoza; and great-nephew, John E. Cox, Jr.
A Funeral Service will be held at Hahn-Cook/Street & Draper Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. on February 10, 2022. A graveside service will follow at Rose Hill Burial Park.
