

Stephen “Steve” A. Smith, an Air Force jet mechanic and leader, is happily remembered for his kind heart, adventurous soul, and willingness to help mankind and creatures alike. Stephen “Steve” A. Smith, 63, died February 2, 2014, at his home in Wellston, OK. A memorial service will be held in his honor on Sunday, February 23, 2014, at his home in Wellston, OK. Steve Smith was born Oct. 12, 1950, at Kessler AFB, Biloxi, MS to Erwin A. and Edith E. Smith. After graduating from Midwest City High School, Steve enlisted in the US Army in January, 1971. After a 2 year service, he was honorably discharged in January, 1973, as a sergeant. During his enlistment, he was decorated with the National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and Expert Badge (Rifle M-16). After leaving the service, Steve attended college at both Rose State College and the University of Oklahoma. His studies encompassed both psychology and accounting.Upon finishing his studies, he then hired on at Tinker AFB as a jet engine mechanic. He made this his life career and retired from Tinker AFB as a crew chief over jet engine repair. In 1988, Steve married Jo Ann. Together they found not only love for each other, but also for animals. Both enjoyed raising both cats and dogs, and later founded Jo-Annimals Rescue Foundation. The rescue helped rehabilitate, relocate, and provide any necessary help needed for all animals. The rescue strived for many years until health issues for both Steve and Jo Ann became too much to overcome. The rescue closed in 2012. Steve had other passions that kept him full of life. Hunting and guns were his great pastime. He lived for deer season and never missed the opportunity to adventure and hunt. The outdoors, the thrill of the hunt, and company of great friends would keep him enjoying the sport until he passed. Steve is survived by his wife of 26 years, Jo Ann (Robinson) Smith, his step son, Gary Robinson, and step daughter, Gina Burris. He also leaves behind siblings, Rick of Sonora, CA, Johnny of Edmond, OK, David of Choctaw, OK, and Martha Holland of Edmond, OK. He has four grandchildren Jessica and Tyne Burris, and Haley and Hannah Robinson.“Papa” Steve, you will forever be in our hearts and memories. We love you dearly.
