Wendell L. Hughes died July 2, 2024. He was born April 10, 1927, to Grover and Jewell Hughes in Thackerville, Oklahoma. He lived his early life in and about that area attending Meadowbrook School west of Marietta. The family moved to San Angelo, Texas where he attended school for about 3 years before moving to Lone Grove, Oklahoma. He then moved to Ardmore, Oklahoma where he attended and graduated from Mt. Washington.
Wendell went to work for SWB Telephone Company at the age of 16 years as a janitor. When he reached 17 years of age he enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserve and served in the South Pacific aboard ship until after WWII was over and he was discharged from the service at Norman, Oklahoma. He rejoined SWBT at Ardmore and was employed by them for the next 40 years.
He met his wife, Wanda Gaye Price, in April 1946. They were married in February 1947. To this union was born one son, Larry Michael Hughes, and 3 daughters Mary Kathleen Hughes, Lisa Gaye Phillips, and Anna Beth Bennett.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two daughters, Mary Kathleen and Anna Beth, and son Michael.
He attended Memorial Road Church of Christ.
Visitation will be at Chapel Hill Funeral Home on Monday, July 8, 2024 from 4 pm to 8 pm.
A graveside service with military honors will be at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
