Christopher Edward Hayes, born in Gardner, Kansas on February 15, 1967, died on January 31, 2025, at 57 years old, just short of his next birthday. Chris was a Gardner, Kansas resident for life. He attended and graduated from the Gardner School systems.
Chris didn’t realize how talented he was playing baseball. After his team won several championships, he decided he was going to move in a different direction, despite how much success he brought to his team.
Chris worked for Frank Ancona in Olathe, then Eveland Brothers body shop in Merriam for over 20 years. He enjoyed working, managing and selling car parts.
In his younger years Chris enjoyed ski trips, he was an excellent skier from his first day. He created many great memories by going on float trips and canoeing on most of the rivers in Missouri. He enjoyed going to Chiefs and Royals ball games with me, his dad, even if there was bad weather. Chris enjoyed his guitar and playing in bands, his record collection, movies and especially westerns.
I’m not going to sugarcoat this, Chris Hayes, died because of alcoholism. Chris wouldn’t or couldn’t quit drinking, despite our best efforts to help him. There are no excuses, but after several of life’s setbacks, beginning 5 years ago, he fell into this trap. It was extremely difficult seeing him battle with his dependence on alcohol, but he was one of many others with the disease. Pat, others and I tried to get him treatment, we had him scheduled at one time but unfortunately, he decided to blow it off. I’ll leave it at that.
Chris is preceded in death by his grandparents, Edward Byron Jr. and Mildred Hayes, and Clarence and Betty Houdashelt; mother, Sharon Kramer; and uncle, Clarence “Hooter” Houdashelt Jr.
Chris is survived by his father, Edward B. Hayes and bonus mother, Patricia; aunts Kathy Hayes and Connie Wright; sisters Tami (Anthony) Bartolomi and Lisa Allender and two sons; nephew Justin Klaas; many cousins, many friends, and his best buddy, Trooper. Christopher's wishes were no services.
