

John William (Billy) Dwyer, 91, of Gardner, Kan., passed away Thursday, May 1, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. John will be cremated according to his wishes. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 8, at McGilley & Frye Funeral Home, 105 East Loula Street, Olathe, Kan. Inurnment with military honors will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 9, at St. Columbine Catholic Cemetery, 207th and Dillie Road, Edgerton, Kan.
John was born Feb. 25, 1923, in Gardner, Kan., to Harry J. and Katheryn E. (Shay) Dwyer. He attended the Lanesfield School until the time he joined the Navy. Having served his country faithfully and honorably for 20 years, John retired from the United States Navy. John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 35 years, Julia Marie Dwyer and son, Patrick M. Deveney. Survivors include his daughter, Margaret M. Carpenter and her husband Leland S. of Gardner; two sons, James W. Dwyer of Mission, Kan., and Joseph R. Deveney of Luray, Kan.; four grandchildren, Ashley N. Deveney, Joseph R. Deveney III, Colby L. Carpenter and Austin M. Carpenter. He will be sadly missed by his sister, Mildred Rousselo. "We are proud to say that our dad was a retired veteran, fisherman, beer drinker and a great dad."
