Carl Clark House, age 95, of Hermitage, Tennessee, passed away on March 13, 2016, at McKendree Village. He was born March 8, 1921 in Midland, Michigan, to the late Carl Clark and Else Maude Fretz House. He married Virginia Lee Winham in 1953, she preceded him in death.
Carl is survived by his niece, Cecily Winham Gresham (Curtis) of St. Petersburg, FL.
Carl grew up and was educated in Buffalo, New York and Ridgeway, Ontario, Canada. At the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Navy as an Aerographer. He served aboard the U.S.S. Corrigedor in WWII, and saw action in the South Pacific. After his time of service, Carl lived in Hollywood, California, New York City and St. Charles, Missouri, before settling in Tennessee, at McKendree Village, where he resided for almost 36 years.
Carl worked as a Food Service manager at Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Missouri, where he met Virginia Lee Winham. They were married in her hometown, at the McKendree Memorial United Methodist Church in Portland, Tennessee. Together they went on to build and operate their own restaurant, the “Mother-In-Law House”, in the historical area of St. Charles. The restaurant is still operating today, and looks very much the same as when Carl was the owner. He sold the restaurant and moved to McKendree Village Towers in 1980. He built and moved to Cottage #6 in 1982. Over his lifetime he resided in every building at McKendree Village. Carl not only lived at McKendree, but also volunteered and entertained with his musical, acting and recitation talents. He wrote poems, sang in the choir, and became quite the billiards player. Carl also volunteered at Alive Hospice, and the American Cancer Society. He was an active member of Hermitage United Methodist Church, Emmaus Community, and the Ballinger Class.
He was loved and will be missed by many!
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Wednesday, March 16, 2016, at one o’clock in the afternoon at Hermitage United Methodist Church with Rev. Chris Seifert and Dr. Joel Emerson officiating.
Interment will follow at Hermitage Memorial Gardens.
