

Herbert Wittmann, 91, of Old Hickory, TN passed away Saturday, August 19, 2023. He was a wonderful father, loving grandfather, and dedicated husband. He was a kind, loving, and generous person who touched many lives.
Herb was born in Philadelphia, PA. At a young age he returned to Nürnberg, Germany with his family surviving the US bombing and invasion of Nürnberg at the end of WWII. At age 19, Herb came to New York and worked for a Tool and Die Maker for three years and learned a trade before joining the United States Army.
Herb served two years with the United States Army as a helicopter mechanic during the Korean Conflict. Following his service, he graduated from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked as an Engineering Manager for DuPont, a former chemical plant in Old Hickory, TN, for twenty-six years. He continued his career at Reemay, Inc., a fabric mill, for another fifteen years before he retired. Herb believed in education and started an apprenticeship program, educating young engineers, while at Reemay.
Herb met the love of his life, Linda, on a blind date while they attended Vanderbilt University. After they married, they spent three years in Germany with DuPont. Herb and Linda returned to Old Hickory, living in the Brandywine subdivision, for 50 years. Herb had many hobbies but especially enjoyed snow skiing, tennis, traveling abroad, and woodworking. He was fluent in German all his life and made many trips back to Germany to visit family over the years.
Herb was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Linda Wittmann, and a sister, Ruth Puckett. He is survived by his daughter Kammi (Gary) Grimes; grand-daughter, Kayla Grimes; and nieces, Susan (Mike) Murphy and Nancy (Dick) Shultz.
Visitation will be held Saturday October 21, 2023 at the Hermitage Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 535 Shute Lane, Old Hickory, TN from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM. The Celebration of Life service will be held at 12:00PM in the Tulip Grove Room at the funeral home. Following the service, Herb will be inurned in the Garden of Memories Mausoleum at Hermitage Memorial Gardens.
