Mary was dedicated to her family and enjoyed her children’s sporting events and other activities including game nights and days at the swimming pool when they were younger. Along with her husband, Mary had a passion for gardening, bird watching, scenic drives, and visiting Gatlinburg every spring and fall. She was retired from a professional career as a court officer for General Sessions Judge Leon Ruben, where she served for over 20 years.
She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years Desmond Carter, daughter Vikki Carter and son Jimmy (Sunshine) Carter; granddaughter Gloria Carter and sister Gloria Shockney.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents Ruth and Burton Young and brother Burton Young.
A Gathering of family and friends will be Thursday, January 15, 2026, from 1:00-3:00 pm at Hermitage Funeral Home, 3:00 pm. Graveside service will follow at Hermitage Memorial Gardens.
