Mary Orlene Vining, age 80, passed away on April 26, 2026. Born on January 1, 1946, Mary was raised in Donelson, Tennessee, where her life was shaped by steady values and a deep care for others that remained constant through the years. She remained in the Middle Tennessee area for most of her life.
Mary is survived by her children, Kristie Wood (Joel), Ronald Vining (Lisa), Lisa Lester (George), Phillip Vining (Jenny) and; her sisters, June Williams (Jim), and Donna (Eddie) Stanton; her brother, Jack Huggins (Nancy); her grandchildren, Brian Hinkley (Courtney), Stephanie Hinkley, Tonya Hinkley, Robby Thompson, Matt Vining (Rylee Jane), Drew Vining, Dakota Wood (Lydia), Jaden Perez (Jesse); her great-grandchildren, Avonlea Wood, August Wood, Cole Hinkley, Mason Hinkley, and Eli Smith; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Mary is preceded by her parents, Mary Juanita Huggins, and Monroe Jackson Huggins, and sisters Judie Woodard and Cindy Huggins.
Mary attended Donelson High School and went on to graduate from Middle Tennessee State University. Her commitment to learning naturally grew into a life of service through education, a calling she carried with sincerity and purpose.
Mary spent her long career teaching and eventually put down roots in seventh grade math and served students and families through her tenure at Smyrna Middle School, as well as at Thurman Francis Jr. High. In the classroom and beyond it, she was known for the steady generosity of spirit that makes a lasting difference: patient, compassionate, and quietly giving of herself to others.
Above all else, Mary cherished spending time with her family. Her care was practical and constant, expressed in the ways she showed up, the ways she listened, and the ways she put others first.
Mary was known for her love of cooking and baking, and for making big, delicious spreads for family gatherings—meals that felt like welcome itself. When she wasn’t in the kitchen, she could be found outside, where she loved to garden and grew a plethora of vegetables that she both put on the dinner table and canned. Her family also remembers her love of travel, especially road trips, which were her favorite. Christmas was her favorite holiday—a season made special by time with family, shopping, and the joy she took in giving. She was a thoughtful, generous gift giver, always attentive to what might bring someone comfort or happiness.
Mary will live on in our minds and our hearts as someone whose legacy is kindness—selflessness, compassion, and her willingness to help anyone. She was the kind of person who would give you her last dollar, or the shirt off her back, without hesitation and without needing recognition.
A Simple Gathering will be held at Hermitage Funeral Home, 535 Shute Ln, Old Hickory, TN 37138, on April 29, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
The family would like to thank friends and the community for their support during this difficult time.
