Beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Robert Jesse Lowe, Jr., “Bobby Lowe”, died peacefully on January 22, 2022, in Nashville, TN. He was 72 years old. Bobby was preceded in death by his mother, Rachel Moore Lowe; his father, Robert Jesse Lowe, Sr.; his stepsister, June Black; and his daughter, Rachel Rene Lowe. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Jeannine Lowe; sons Scott Lowe (Amy), Robert Cary Lowe (Elaine), Christopher Lowe (Kimberly); and grandchildren Davis, Ella, Grace-Mahlan, Ethan, and Brendan.
Bobby was born in Memphis, TN, on November 18, 1949. He was the only child to his amazing single mother, Rachel. He loved to play sports, especially basketball, which became a love he later passed on to his three boys. After attending high school at Kingsbury High School in Memphis, TN, Bobby went on to graduate from Tennessee Temple University in Chattanooga, TN. While attending TTU, he met the love of his life, Jeannine Cary, originally from Fairbanks, AK. Shortly after meeting, they married and began their family.
After their three sons were born, they moved the family back to Bobby’s hometown of Memphis, TN. Bobby worked tirelessly to provide well for his family. He was a successful salesman in the tool and dye industry, a position he held for over 41 years. To ensure his children had the best education, Bobby worked two additional jobs to make ends meet. He delivered pizzas at night and enlisted his sons to help with a yard-cutting business. His work ethic was unmatched and became a shining example to his sons, teaching them how to work and maintain responsibilities from a young age (back then, there were no child labor laws:).
Along with being incredibly strong-willed and steadfast, Bobby was a dedicated, loving, and grace-filled father. He never missed a single one of his sons’ sporting events. Ever. There was even a time when he showed up to a basketball game with his Domino’s pizza uniform on. Even though his son was embarrassed and asked him to change, Bobby didn’t get offended. He simply showed grace and love. However, he certainly made sure to have an extra shirt on hand to change into next time.
Bobby’s character—his tenacity, grace, compassion, mercy, generosity, joy, gentleness, patience, and even his sense of humor—was rooted in his unwavering faith in his loving God. The gospel of Jesus was his anchor. He would regularly share with us Ephesians 2:8-9: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” His favorite hymn was “Not What My Hands Have Done,” with his favorite line being “Thy work alone, O Christ, can ease this weight of sin; thy blood alone, O Lamb of God, can give me peace within.”
He was passionate about sharing this beautiful grace with not only his family, but with everyone he met. He did this by serving in any way that he could, including volunteering to make sloppy joes for the youth group at church, teaching both children’s and adult Sunday school, ministering in church leadership positions, and most recently serving as an elder at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Nashville. One of his favorite things to do was to volunteer at the Nashville Rescue Mission. He would often welcome friends from the Mission into his home for periods of time to provide a healing place, filled with peace flowing from the Gospel and a servant’s hand in rebuilding their lives. The last few years, Bobby found great joy in cooking with his family. He loved finding a new recipe and sharing it with his loved ones, whether by cooking it himself or utilizing his gifts of delegation and persuasion to implement his culinary plan. He also loved a good conversation and a hearty laugh, both of which most often occurred on his back porch over a cigar.
Tenacity, grace, and joy—these three words seem to encompass so much of who Bobby Lowe was. The gospel of Jesus shaped his heart and his relentless love for his family and friends. His greatest joy was his family—his wife of 50 years, his three sons, his three daughters-in-law, and his four grandchildren. He would do anything for any of them at the drop of a hat. Despite being sick in his last few years, he did everything he could from having flooring replaced and getting his sons to fix faucets, to renovating the back deck and organizing the garage. All of this to make sure the love of his life, Jeannine, would be safe and taken care of after he passed on to glory.
Bobby fought a courageous fight with a heart full of grace. Although he succumbed to the many complications stemming from kidney failure, we are so thankful that he is now in the arms of Jesus where there is no more sickness, sorrow, pain, or death. He is now in heaven experiencing the final line of his favorite hymn, “I love because He loveth me; I live because He lives.”
