

of Alzheimer’s disease on December 8, 2023. She was born on July 26, 1938, in Hartford, CT,
to the late Flora and Robert Newton. Carole was preceded in death by her parents; her brother,
Robert T. Newton; her sisters, Louise and Joan Newton; and her daughter, Elaine Pound.
Carole was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She is
survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Robert Clifford, Jr. She will be deeply missed by her
daughter, Leslie Clifford-Hoffman, and Leslie’s husband, Bernard; her son, John Turick, and his
wife, Janice; and her grandchildren: Chase Hoffman, Kaleigh Hoffman, Shannon Pound,
Norman Pound, Daniel Pound, Jessie Erdmann, and Anna Coombs. Carole is also survived by
her sister, Nancy Griffin, and her husband Donald; her sister-in-law, Ellen Newton; her brother,
Jim Newton, and his wife, MaryAnn; her sister, Elizabeth Rinaldi, and her husband, Bob.
Carole had a fulfilling career, having worked in various industries throughout her life. She served
as a bookkeeper for several local businesses and was the owner and founder of Finally
Handweavers. She was also a founding member of the Connecticut River Artisans Cooperative.
Additionally, she was most proud of her career as a real estate agent. Over the years, Carole
was a member of the East Haddam Republicans, the Gardening Club, and volunteered at the
Rathbun Free Memorial Library.
In her free time, Carole enjoyed pursuing her many hobbies and interests. She had a passion
for crafting, gardening, decorating, and horses. These activities brought her joy and allowed her
to express her creativity.
A memorial service celebrating Carole's life will be held on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at
Fulton-Theroux Funeral Service, located at 13 Beckwith Lane, Old Lyme, CT 06371. Open
visiting hours will be held from 2:00 PM to 3:15 PM, followed by a memorial service from 3:15
PM to 4:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association
(https://alz.org) in her honor.
Carole will be remembered for her fun-loving nature, sense of humor, and generosity. She was
deeply devoted to her family and leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. She
will be greatly missed by all who knew her. The family wish to thank the kind, loving, and
devoted staff at Chestelm Health and Rehabilitation Center in Moodus, CT, as well as the
compassionate hospice services provided by Vitas Healthcare.
